Local Food and Drink
The valley has many top quality restaurants that allow guests to sample some hearty Austrian food. Vienna Schnitzel, pork knuckle and mixed grills are the order of the day all washed down with lots of beer. (Salad options also available.) Zipfer and Egger are the two local beers and due to their location are required to conform to the Bavarian Purity Laws of 1487.
The Schrofen Mountain Alm
Every Saturday the place to be is the Schrofen Mountain Alm where, having either hiked up or caught the mountain train, guests will enjoy some traditional Tyrolean food whilst being entertained to some lively Austrian music. Not to be missed.
Every year the Valley hosts several beer festivals which is a great chance to see Austrians do what they do best. Drink. Much like a scaled down Oktoberfest the valley festivals offer live music, traditional food and plenty of drinks enjoyed by all the family regardless of generation. The undoubted highlight of these is always the Talfest, heldevery year at the beginning of August.
To call it Krautinger simply 'schnapps' is almost an insult! Krautinger is a cure-all, elixir and a well-loved after dinner drink that will cure you of almost all know aliments as well as making you less able to be killed by conventional weaponry. Thanks to Empress Maria Theresa, who visited the Wildschönau Valley in 1771, schnapps is distilled exclusively here by Royal decree using the same traditional methods so as to ensure it keeps its unique properties!
Gorgeous (Kundl) Gorge walk!
