Long Way Round

Let’s get this one out of the way early – yes, there are quicker ways of getting from Paris to Barcelona, they’re just not this much fun. Our “Long Way Round” flexiroute will take you from Paris to Barcelona via eight countries and nineteen destinations. If you think you can come up with a better route let us know and next year we may even name it after you.

Kick off your trip by exploring the sights and sounds of Paris, including Louis XIV’s Palace of Versailles before heading to Bruges for something a little quieter – then Amsterdam for something a little louder!
Cross over into Germany to see how they’re still recovering from over 10 years of Nazi rule and 50 years of division in Berlin and Dresden, before stopping at an internment camp used by the Nazis during their occupation of the Czech Republic (or Czechoslovakia as it was back then). While in the Czech Republic you’ll have the chance to explore the beautiful Prague Castle, or get scared in the slightly spooky Cesky Krumlov version.

Austria is known for its music and mountains: two things you’ll have plenty of time to explore in Vienna, Salzburg and St Johann in Tirol. Down into Italy then for the chance to see Venice’s famous canals (and see just how peaceful somewhere without cars can be). Get away from the main areas for that true Venetian experience.
If that doesn’t take your fancy then Rome will, what with the chance to admire Michelangelo’s fantastic frescoes on the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel or just gape in awe at the sheer size of St Peter’s Basilica.
We’ve another photo stop in the hilltop town of Orvieto before stopping in Siena, home of the world’s maddest horse race in the Il Palio. After there spend a few days in Siena’s great rivals Florence, where you can view Michelangelo’s “David” in the Accademia. Two more stops in Italy then: first up you get the chance to visit the Leaning Tower of Pisa and see what all the fuss is about; then head to La Spezia for the chance to explore five of the most picturesque villages in Europe. Your first view of Vernazza coming from Monteroso Al Mare is one of those “wow” moments you’ll be telling friends for years afterwards.

Two more French stops in Nice (to check out the Principality of Monaco) and Avignon (to check out where the not-so-pious Popes used to live) before making your way to the Catalan capital of Barcelona, where the buildings are funky and the nightlife fabulous!

The Long Way Round is valid for the entire 2009 operating season (May to October). Each "sector" may be travelled once and departures from each city are every other day.
