Ancona, a grimly industrial port city and capital of Le Marche, Italy is worth mentioning mostly because you may be catching ferries to Croatia, Greece or Turkey from here.

Take bus No 1 from the train station to the port. The main APT tourist office ((071 35 89 91; www.comune.ancona.it; Via Thaon de Revel 4; h9am-2pm & 3-6pm Mon-Fri, 9am-1pm & 3-6pm Sat, 9am-1pm Sun, fewer in winter) is out of the way. Stazione Marittima has a tourist office ((071 20 11 83; h 8am-8pm Tue-Sat & 2-8pm Sun & Mon summer). There’s a post office (Largo XXIV Maggio; h8.15am-7pm Mon-Sat).

Buses depart from Piazza Cavour for towns throughout Le Marche. Rome is served by Marozzi ((071 280 23 98). Ancona is on the Bologna–Lecce train line and easily accessible from major towns. Connect to Rome via Foligno.

Ferry operators have booths at the terminal, off Piazza Kennedy. Companies include Superfast ((071 207 02 40) to Patras in Greece (€78), Minoan Lines ((071 20 17 08) to Igoumenitsa and Patras (€68) and Adriatica ((071 20 49 15) to Durrës in Albania (€86) and Split in Croatia (€47). These prices are one-way, deck class in high season.
